Holt Reader Literary focus

By writing and publishing the Modest Proposal, Swift is basically making some really important facts here that England shouldn't ignore. Swift proposes to first feed the children in Ireland with food to fatten them and at last eat them up whether they are boiled, roasted, or whatsoever. This provides the ultimate solution to famine because the children won't have to suffer the famine in the future and they're better off "eaten". Prior to writing this proposal, Swift has had already proposed and tried different measures in order to solve the problem. However, he is almost ignored everytime. Angered by the "feedback" he receives from perhaps the government, he is now cynical and tries to outrage the readers when they read the satirical essay. Swift cannot believe how indifferent England is in solving this critical problem that Ireland faces.
