My own understanding and interpretation of the word "riddle" is that it is usually a sentence or a poem that reveals something "under the surface". Riddles are like puzzles and mazes, they are manipulations of words like a word game. Sometimes riddles can be profound and obscure; people may need a long time to figure them out (or maybe they never do ! ) Furthermore, riddles may use sensory descriptions.

curved like the moon
sweet as candies
(a fruit)
